Poly EHV/PHPA Polymer Fluids

ORS Poly EHV/PHPA is a low temperature < 300’F polymer fluid system utilized for Low-Solids/Non-Dispersed systems for un-weighted < 12.0 ppg fluids with enhanced ROP applications. Both Poly EHV and PHPA serve as encapsulating polymers for improved wellbore stability and stabilize incorporated drilled solids to improve solids removal at the surface. Maintaining drilled solids intact allows for optimum removal of unwarranted drilled solids during initial circulation thereby reducing need for elevated dilution rates.  Poly EHV provides filtrate control properties and stabilizes the Yp:Pv ratios. ORS Poly EHV/PHPA fluids are typically formulated with commercial clay limited @ MBT values +/- 10-12 ppb or utilize upper hole hydrable clays that are incorporated into the circulation system during upper hole drilling intervals.
Adequate use of Traditional Solids Control Equipment is preferred to limit the amount of retained Low Gravity Solids < 6% by volume.  Retained Ultrafines with geometrically progressed surface area reduce the ability to maintain inverted flow properties, typical parameters to identify Polymer fluids with Yp:Pv ratio greater than 1.

A Basic Formula may include:

LGS – < 6%

MBT – < 12ppb

Poly EHV – 0.25ppb – 1ppb

PHPA – 0.1ppb

pH – < 0.1-0.3 Pf

Total Hardness – < 80mg/l soluble Ca

Ionic Inhibition may be formulated into the Poly EHV/PHPA system. Potassium ions may be incorporated by additions of Potassium Acetate or Potassium Silicate with environmental concerns of chlorides.  Potassium substitutes as Quaternary Ammonium Chloride offers inhibitive characteristic in reactive shale sections and for wellbore stability in replacement of Potassium source additives.
Funnel Viscosity and Filtrate Control parameters will dictate polymer concentration.

ORS Therm/Therm-AE Polymer

ORS Therm/Therm-AE Polymer system is a high temperature stabilized system to 400’F and utilized for weighted systems >12.0ppg in Adverse Environment applications. ORTherm is a Sulfonated PolyStyrene-Maleic Anhydride (SSMA) polymer.

ORS Therm-AE is an Acrylamido-Methylpropane-Sulfonic Acid (AMPS) polymer. The combined products serve as polymers for extreme temperature fluid property stabilization. ORS Resinate is a resinated polymer-lignite designed to supplement high temperatue filtrate control. Drilling Specialties HE 100 or HE 300 are supplemental products for special application in hostile environments involving contaminates as divalent cations of Ca, Mg, CO2& H2S gas intrusions, salt, etc.

Adequate use of Traditional Solids Control Equipment is recommended to limit the amount of retained Low Gravity Solids < 6% by volume.  Retained Ultrafines with geometrically progressed surface area reduce the ability to maintain acceptable rheological properties/gel strengths, wallcake texture and HtHp filtration control.

Polymer Fluids

Polymer Fluids may encompass an extended spectrum of applications that include traditional fluids such as Low-Solids/Non-Dispersed, Minimized Clay Polymer, Clear Fluids and Stiff Foam Polymer. We have selected these above categories to simplify our presentation for some of ORS Fluids polymer fluids.

Low-Solids/Non-Dispersed systems are generally classified as low pH, un-weighted < 12.0 ppg fluids for enhanced ROP applications. These fluids typically are formulated with commercial clay maintained @ MBT values +/- 10-12 ppb and Polymer Clay Extenders as co-polymer of polyacrylamide/polyacrylate or xanthan gum. The typical inverted flow properties have favored PDC drilling with improved fluid hydraulic parameters. The Shear Thinning and Rejuvenating characteristics offer favorable properties for bit and annular hydraulics.

The sodium clay content is enhanced with high yielding polymers to maintain minimum Pv with elevated Yp. Filtrate control is provided with Drispac, PolyEHV, SPA and Starch products.

Minimized Clay/Polymer systems are utilized for weighted fluids, hostile environments and HT applications. Basic formulations for elevated BHT wellbore conditions include specialty polymers as ORS Resinate, ORS Therm and ORS Therm AE polymers.  Additional products are available from Drilling Specialties as Dristemp, Driscal, HE 150 and HE300.

BASF PolyDrill, PolyVis II and PolyThin completes our selection of HT Polymer systems.
Stiff Foam/Polymer systems have found application in upper hole drilling when circulation is cannot be established with conventional water or oil base systems. The aerated system may be treated with encapsulating polymers for a Stiff Foam system. LCM may be added as drilling conditions warrant use of loss circulation/seepage control product.

Corrosion control additives may be utilized in the Stiff Foam system for drill string protection.

Air-Foam Polymer Fluids

Air-Foam Polymer fluids are utilized for upper hole drilling intervals when conventional water base and/or oil base fluids are not practical to maintain or establish circulation.  Typically stiff foam sweeps are pumped for wellbore cleaning.  A polymer as CMC or PAC is added in slug pit pills and injected with air drilling equipment to create a foam pill.

Foam drilling fluids may be established with base water and polymer mixture, and injected with air drilling equipment.  Advantages of foam drilling may be viewed in our website link for additional information.
